In 1608 Michelangelo the Younger bought in Florence this painting, that came from Rome and was believed to be by Michelangelo. But, it is one of the very few known works by Condivi, who is famous for his Life of Michelangelo (1553). The composition derives from a cartoon by Michelangelo, of similar size, that is now in the British Museum. Michelangelo the Younger decided to place the painting in a position of honour: it served to represent, within the overall decorative program, the artist’s activity as a painter.
