12 years, she was a school teacher. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed her San Luis postmistress, where she served for 39 years.
Erinea “Nea” Garcia Gallegos was born in Conejos, Colorado. Her paternal and maternal ancestors were among the earliest Spanish-speaking settlers, and they established farms on Mexican land grants before Colorado was a state. Gallegos’ legacy was her firm belief in education. In her honor, a scholarship fund at Adams State College was established by the Gallegos family.
