In 1522, Juan Sebastián Elcano, the first person to circumnavigate the world, was compensated by Charles V for his achievement with an annuity of 500 gold ducats per year. He was also given a coat of arms, whose crest features a globe with the inscription Primus circumdedisti me. Although the inscription is in Latin, it is not from the Roman age. It translates as: "You were the first to circumnavigate me."
