Ury, an individualist among artists, painted this interior in Belgium after a long period in Paris — three years before moving to Berlin where he established himself as a painter of cityscapes. “Skilled in the use of his palette, yet with little creative power:” this assessment by his contemporaries points towards the independence with which Ury reacted to contemporary art. The duality of this work was a particular source of irritation, for it combined Impressionistic sensitivity to the phenomena of light and shade with geometric space and stereometric figures, which gave the subject matter a metaphysical quality that transcended the ordinary and everyday.

  • Artist biography: Lesser Ury was a German Impressionist painter and printmaker. After the early death of his father his family moved to Berlin. At the age of 17 he left school to become an apprentice with a tradesman before moving to Düsseldorf, where he studied painting at the Academy of Arts. He spent some time in such cities as Brussels, Paris and Stuttgart but returned to Berlin in 1887, where he exhibited with the Berlin Secession. He had his first solo exhibition in 1915. Ury depicted (urban) landscapes and interior scenes that were greatly indebted to Impressionism. He is best known for his compositions of nocturnal café scenes and rainy streets. Famous artworks by Ury include 'Café Bauer' (1895) and 'Nachtbeleuchtung' (1889).
