The Book of Esther is read from a scroll similar to the Torah scroll. Its traditional name is megillah, or Megillat Esther. The scroll is read only on Purim, and its parchment scroll has to be carefully protected from damage throughout the rest of the year. This item is a Megillah-case made of silver, chased. The parchment or paper scroll containing the text of the Book of Esther can be stored in its cylindrical body. The scroll itself is affixed to and rolled on the stave that sticks out of the cylindrical body. On the body, there is a shield with an interesting inscription. The name of the owner with Hebrew characters, a certain Israel. And then the initials J.D. with Latin characters. It is unusual that the date is given according to the Jewish era, but with Arabic numerals instead of using the numerical value of the Hebrew characters.
