This sensuous yet oddly crustacean-like dress is essentially a tube cut on the grain of the fabric that is draped by way of a series of horizontal upward tucks sewn onto a padded central spine. The ingenious design allows for the individual topography of the wearer’s body to give it shape. James continued to make variations of the dress for nearly twenty years.
