  • Date Created: 1866/1868
  • Location Created: Gown: New Orleans, Louisiana Pendant: Probably Europe

  • Provenance: Gown: Gift of Cathy Gordon. The gown was given to the Denver Art Museum by Mrs. Stephen Abbot and Mrs. M.L. Marsh, Jr. See pg. 26 and 27. It was de-accessioned from the collection and sold by Whitaker Auction House, where the FIDM Museum donor purchased it. The description of the gown states it was worn by Miss Mary May to a ball held in honor of the visit of the Prince of Wales to New Orleans in 1860. This is not possible, as the gown post-dates 1860. The black lace modesty piece mentioned in the Denver catalogue description was determined to be from the 1950s and was removed from the dress, and discarded.
