Born in Washington, D.C., Taylor began drawing when he was five years old. He later studied at the Corcoran and the Art Students League in New York. In 1931 Taylor joined a lithography class and it quickly became his graphic medium of choice. At age twenty, Taylor met Josephine Pinckney of Charleston. Their ensuing relationship prompted Taylor to visit Charleston and execute numerous prints of the city and surrounding lowcountry. In preparation for "Experience Meeting," Taylor attended three hours of services at the Macedonia A.M.E Church. He listened and observed and one year later created this print.
