This booklet outlining the "Extraordinary Life and Character of Mary Bateman, the Yorkshire witch" was published by Edward Baines of Leeds in the year that Mary Bateman was executed (1809). Born near Thirsk, Mary came to Leeds in 1788. Her twenty-year criminal career mostly involved swindling and fraud but she was finally accused of the murder by poisoning of Rachel Perigo, and convicted on the evidence of Leeds surgeon Thomas Chorley. She was hanged at York Castle and her body was take to Leeds General Infirmary. Her skeleton is now owned by the Thackray Medical Museum.
