Wangye Museum

Wangye Museum
Shenzhen, China

This is a green glazed vessel flute. The vessel flute (xun) is one of the oldest musical instruments of China. In the Neolithic Age, people tied ropes to stones or balls of clay to hunt, some of which were hollow. The hollow ones made a pleasant sound when they were thrown. This inspired the people to create a musical instrument based on the stones. The xun had only one finger hole at first; later, it had multiple finger holes.
