At over 1 metre in length, the False Trumpet Snail (Syrinx aruanus) is the largest marine snail in the world. It is found along the coast of the Northern Territory in Australia, as well as the Kimberley coast of Western Australia and the southern coast of Papua New Guinea. Juvenile False Trumpets have a high, multi-whorled shell when they first hatch from their egg cases, but the top part of the shell falls off when they mature. Therefore, juveniles could easily be mistaken for a different species.
