Marriage and its ceremonies were attractive subjects for fan painters. The marriage banquet is a popular scene on many 18th-century fans. This is a particularly charming version, with scenes of feasting and dancing. Observant touches include the children in one corner imitating the married couple, and a man stealing a bottle of wine from a crate in another corner. In the centre are the bride and groom, richly dressed in new clothes, as was the custom.
