The fresh greens of this fan leaf recall an English summer. The scene includes vibrant red hollyhocks beside two classical urns and a canopy of leafy branches. The accuracy of the flower painting is a clue to where the fan was made. English fan artists and designers were renowned for their precise interpretations of flowers and foliage. The light floral border, the sea-shells and the ornate curling branches are in the Rococo style. However, the sticks are Chinese in origin. They were made in China by workers deliberately copying Western designs for export to Europe.
