FARMAN 1909 - replica

National Museum of Science and Technology Leonardo Da Vinci

National Museum of Science and Technology Leonardo Da Vinci
Milan, Italy

From the very beginning, most military air activity in Europe and in Italy took place on Farman aircrafts. Henry Farman's biplanes - with a small lower wing - were first put to use in warfare during the war with Libya with 4 squadrons following the Italian Army's expeditionary force. This plane has had many experimental uses: in particular, Alessandro Guidoni used one of them for the first attempts at floats, in preparation for the development of torpedo bombers. The model here on display is a flying reconstruction of the second type of aircraft which entered into service in the first Italian Air Force flight school, which opened in January 1910. This replice in 1:1 scale, made following the original plans and with period techniques, flew in 1956 at the Air show at Fiumicino. At the controls was the test pilot Evasio Ferretti.
