After starting out as a sculptor with a solo show in Rome at the Libro Galleria al
Ferro di Cavallo in 1981, Renda began to work with mosaic in the mid-1980s. A predominant interest in architecture led in the late ’80s and ’90s to the Perspectives series of large mosaic panels presenting problematic, accentuated views of an architectonic character. The same period saw a growing interest in the universe of the domestic environment and utensils that took concrete shape in a large number of objects labelled “borderline” for their ambiguous relationship with any real possibility of use. Mosaic tends in his most recent work to interact with photography,
used both as the representation of real subjects and to simulate mosaic. Reinterpreted almost as modern pixels, the tesserae allow Renda to construct reality while examining the splintering of image at the same time.(Transl. by Paul Metcalfe per Scriptum, Roma)
