In the procession leading up to the carousel celebrating King Karl XI's ascension to the throne in 1672 several guardsmen followed behind the King. Some of them carried spears and some fasces, a symbol of the right to rule and govern. The fasces, made to look like bundles of sticks bound to an axe, were carved of wood and painted.
