Female kifwebe mask

Mask of wood and plant fibres, made before 1902. Such bifwebe (singular kifwebe) masks were used by the Songe and Luba peoples of the eastern Congo. Female mask like this one were painted mostly white and were used to invoke benevolent powers and identify the forces of evil.
