St. Martin is carried in the procession as a Bishop, a role he played during part of his life. However, his story begins long before that. As a very young man, he enlisted as a roman soldier. It was precisely in Amiens, France, that the episode that made him famous took place. The humble nature of this saint led him to share his cloak with a beggar who was Christ himself. The cold felt until then suddenly disappeared and the sun shone radiant on the horizon, the cold subsided and the temperatures rose, making this phenomenon known as the Summer of St. Martin. This event led St. Martin to leave the army and to become a Christian. In 370, at the age of 55, he was elected Bishop of Tours. He founded many parishes and continued to help the needy (QUINTAS, 2011: 63-64; ICONOGRAFIA, 2014).
