Festival of Sumiyoshi Shrine

18th century (Edo period)

Sakai City Museum
Sakai-shi, Osaka, Japan

As the tutelary of Sakai, the Sumiyoshi Shrine in Osaka has drawn many worshippers since ancient times. The Nagoshi-no-harae, summer purification ritual of the shrine, which has been held on the last day of the sixth lunar month, still represents the tie between the shrine and the town of Sakai.
The painting depicts the procession of the festival. The sacred mikoshi palanquin travels from the shrine in Osaka to the otabisho, a temporary shrine in Sakai. The whole image is divided into three horizontal layers; the procession of the sacred mikoshi palanquin travels from the shrine on the left of the top layer to the town of Sakai on the bottom layer.
