江戸初期、六郷川には橋が架けられていましたが、度々の洪水で橋が流され、元禄元年（1688）の流失以後は舟渡しとなりました。これが近代まで続く「六郷の渡し」です。対岸奥に見える川会所で、乗客は船賃を払いました。
