Bjeri reliquary figure

The Fang stored the skull and bones of the deceased inside bark containers topped by guardian figures like this one. The guardians allowed people to communicate with ancestors and obtain their protection. During initiation rituals, the bjeri were set in motion like marionettes to make ancestral spirits manifest to the young initiates.
