Wilfred Avery (1926-2016). Born in South Molton. Avery attended Barnstaple Grammar School and later St Paul’s College in Cheltenham where he studied painting. Many of his early drawings, collages and oils show a clear influence from the Devonshire landscape. Moving to London in 1952, his paintings were exhibited by Helen Lessore at the Beaux Arts Gallery in the show Ten Young Artists. Avery’s early realist paintings were linked by some critics to the 'Kitchen Sink' group of painters. His first solo show in 1954 was in Gallery One with Victor Musgrave, where he later exhibited again in 1956. His painting ‘Figures on a Beach’ was exhibited with the London Group in 1962.
