Warner Brothers Studio created Marvin the Martian in 1948 as a more contemporary adversary to Bug Bunny than Wile E. Coyote. Marvin first appeared in "Hare Devil" just as the United States settled into a Cold War with the Soviet Union that began reaching out into outer space. In his first appearance, the alien was known only as commander X-23 intent on blowing up the earth because, from Mars, the earth blocked Marvin's view of Venus. Eventually, Mervin's pet, Commander K-9 the space dog, arrived as did Marvin's love interest, Marcia Martian. Marvin has appeared in numerous cartoons, animated feature-length films, video games, and commercials. Since his first appearance, Marvin has kept up with the times. In 1991's "Bugs Bunny's Lunar Tunes," Marvin pleads with a Mars court to--as usual--blow up the earth, but he offers several new justifications: the earth creates pollution, clutters up outer space, and portrays space people as monsters.
