Sculpture of Buddha Amitayus, the Buddha of Limitless Life, seated on a rectangular throne in the vajrasana pose with his hands in a meditative position holding “Kalash” (the sacred vase of life) containing “Amrita”, a wine extracted from the soma plant which, when offered to the gods, gives them immortality. It is thus used in Bhima Ratha rituals to cure diseases, give vital power, and prolong life. These rituals happen when someone reaches the age of 77 years, 7 months, and 7 days—the age from which a person is no longer considered responsible for their actions.
A nine-character mark has been made inside the throne. This is the mark of Qianlong Emperor of China, which certifies that this piece was made in Beijing but was to be used in Tibet, which was common in the production of images that were made to satisfy the demands of worshipers in both Tibet and Mongolia.
