Bongo peoples, Sudanpossibly 19th century

Among the Bongo peoples, figurative sculptures carved from dense mahogany wood were placed at the centre of stone-covered burial mounds or graves. When exposed to the sun, the naturally reddish-brown wood faded to a light brown, while moisture during the rainy season caused the figures to wear. These grave figures usually honoured important hunters and warriors, but in this case it seems that an important woman was represented.
