Figure set:Farmer & Milkmaid

In 1903 Philadelphia toy maker A. Schoenhut patented its first jointed, wooden figure. The Schoenhut clown became the first in a series of such figures that comprised the Humpty Dumpty Circus set, named for a popular play of the time. Several other performers, such as the ringmaster, acrobat, and lady circus rider, as well as over thirty different animals, eventually joined the clown under the Big Top. In 1908 Schoenhut introduced a farm set, which included a farmer, milkmaid, cow, sheep, cat, rabbit, and other animals, as well as agriculture themed accessories. Though not typically thought of as circus performers, Schoenhut advertised the farmer and his companions as part of the Humpty Dumpty Circus. Whether or not children played with the farm figures with their circus sets, however, is impossible to say. The farm toys remained in production until the mid to late 1920s.
