Finger ring set with a garnet gem - front view

Leeds Museums & Galleries

United Kingdom

An unusually large, complete gold finger ring with lozenge-shaped, stepped bezel. It is formed by a large lozenge, surmounted by two consecutively smaller lozenges, the upper of which in turn carries an oval garnet in a dog-tooth setting that is framed by a twisted gold wire. The angles of the lozenges are hold groups of two to four gold pellets and gold filligree and further pellets fill the spaces in between the groups.
The cabochon garnet has an imperfection and is too small for its setting.
The hoop consists of a twisted wire with split, scrolled ends that are soldered to the back of the bezel. The two joins of hoop and bezel are further embellished by the addition of gold pellets and U-shaped frames of fine, twisted wire.
