First Attempt To Integrate Charlotte Schools

Dorothy Counts, Delois Huntley, Girvaud Roberts, and her brother Gus Roberts became the first African American students to attend four of Charlotte’s all-white schools in 1957. This attempt to desegregate Charlotte City Schools, organized and supported by the NAACP, was met with hostility by many students and community members. The photograph is of Harding High School, where Dorothy Counts attended school for four days before withdrawing for her safety.
