At the 1963 International Radio Exhibition, the Philips EL 3300 was the first device in a new medium of recording: the compact cassette. In comparison to tapes, the sound quality was still good. In the 1970s, the inexpensive and robust cassette was a great success: young people could now easily record hits from the radio. Until recordable audio CDs and MP3 digital format in the late 1990s, the cassette remained the predominant recording medium.
