On August 6, 1787, the Constitutional Convention's Committee of Detail presented this first draft, printed by Dunlap and Claypoole, to the Committee of the Whole House. South Carolina delegate Pierce Butler used this copy, one of only seventeen still in existence, to record the progress of the deliberations.
