A highlight of the First World War Galleries is the binnacle from the German raider SMS Emden. Emden's raids against the allied commercial interests in the Indian Ocean during the First World War proved to be a successful tactic until they were brought to an end by HMAS Sydney off the Cocos Islands on 9 November 1914. The binnacle is on loan courtesy of the Royal Australian Navy Heritage Collection.
