The place where the Palácio da Justiça (Courthouse) now stands was previously occupied by a Fish Market, in order to concentrate the sale of fish and animal entrails in a single place. The building, begun in 1869, was accessible from the Fogueteiros Street and stood out by its scale suited to the terrain. The market was conceived in levels that lodged flower and horticultural stalls, as well as a fountain that was later relocated to the Largo do Monte dos Judeus after its demolition.
