Once fish is caught, fishermen immediately gut the fish, extract the blood and organs before washing it in cold water to remove bacteria and surrounding the fish with crushed ice to slow down any bacterial growth. By using crushed ice, fishermen can maintain the freshness of fish before unloading their catch at the ports.
