18th century

Essen, Germany

In terms of weaponry, the flintlock mechanism is a further development of the wheel lock. A sword was hammered into the Essen gun barrels as a hallmark; the maker’s engraving is below the flintlock. The artistic design of this pistol – the grotesque mask on the trigger guard, the panther head on the grip – indicates that it was a commissioned work.
