Once the carcasses assumed the "death pose," they were buried by sediment carried by river currents, which jumbled the skeletons together during a flood. Then, the process of fossilization began: minerals dissolved in groundwater replaced much of the original bone and petrified the skeleton. Eventually, rain and wind eroded the rock layers, exposing bone fragments that were recognized by Colbert and his team.
