to the 4th century, when Milan was the seat of the imperial court and centre of
a vast diocese, made prestigious by the pastoral and political action of its
great archbishop Ambrogio. Like other mosaics of
the time, it has a refined ornamental design, with frames, crosses and small
squares filled with intertwined ribbons, geometric patterns and flowers
