When designing the Point-de-France lace, the claim is that the technical quality is better than the lace imported from Italy. This also applies to artistic quality. To achieve this, court painters of the King create basic patterns. The motifs of this valance correspond to the characteristic style of Jean Bérains (1640-1711), the founder of the so-called Bandelwerk, a typical decoration element of Régence.
