The pen name of scholar Jo Hui-ryong (1797-1860) was Maesu, literally “to give plum blossoms” showing that he enjoyed painting plum blossoms. In this painting of his, a thick plum branch of is rendered in the shape of the letter S in light colors along the entire length of the paper, and the twigs stem from the top in dark colors. The petals painted using the Gureuk technique show the simple beauty of spring.
