Flying K was inspired by a skiing trip in Switzerland when Gordon observed a ski race called the flying kilometer. In this race, skiers would attempt to go as fast as possible over a measured kilometer. When Gordon had finished this sculpture, the horizontal portion reminded him of a wing and one of the pedestals reminded him of a ski boot. Thus, he named the work after the race, K for kilometer.
