Japanese farmers from a village called Sasano spent winters carving birds of one piece of wood. Sasano-bori carvings are distinguished by their curled ribbons of wood that signify bird feathers. Craftsman fashion these delicate carvings from small branches using a cutting device that looks like a meat cleaver. The Japanese believed that in wartime, Sasano-bori birds attracted the favor of the gods.
