A fibreglass sphere with a series of holes in one half illuminated by a spotlight so
as to complete the series by means of light inside the other. Geometry and technology
meld in poetry through the artist’s work. A Roman artist by birth and training,
Mochetti made his debut on the capital’s art scene in 1968 with his first solo
show at the historic Galleria La Salita, comprising ten projects and two completed
works. Oscillating from the outset between the
twin poles of art and technology, he works with an understanding of the laws of
atomic physics and quantum mechanics while focusing particular attention on
light. The action performed on the sphere makes
an evident allusion to the work on material and the concept of space introduced
by Lucio Fontana: an open, nuclear spatiality where a beam of light produces a
temporary visual result the perception of which changes in relation to time and
viewpoint. Mochetti’s work finds its perfect location in the middle of the room, in
accordance with his wishes, and gives meaning to the space it inhabits by conjuring
up neo-Metaphysical settings. (Transl. by Paul Metcalfe per Scriptum, Roma)
