The Buddhapada or the Buddha's foot print is carved under the dome of a votive stupa having a groove in the center for inserting the umbrella (chhatravali). Among the Buddhists both the stupa and the footprint symbolizing the Master were objects of great veneration. The present foot print is marked with several auspicious designs like a wheel (chakra), a conch shell placed on a pedestal, a vessel with spout again placed on a pedestal, a floral motif resembling the sun, and a crown flanked by two standing figures, one winged male and the a lady. The Buddhapadas happen to be very popular since the Sunga period and continued to be venerated till the present time.
