The Monterey pine, Pinus radiata, at Harcourt Arboretum can be found next to our Woodland Barn. The cones are serotinous, or more specifically pyriscence, meaning that the seeds are only released once the cones are exposed to high temperatures, such as a forest fire. This tree is native to California but can grow much faster in the UK.
