During the Carboniferous, the age of the “bituminous coal forests,” horsetails grew to gigantic proportions and formed bizarre trees with a height of more than 10 meters. While modern horsetails no longer carry leaves, the Carboniferous representatives clearly show the whorls of true needle-like leaves.
