Dung beetles, also known as "rollers", belong to the subfamily Scarabaeinae in the order Coleoptera. They are large or medium sized insects with black or dark brown body. They usually feed on dung or decomposing matter and play an important role in ecosystem balance. They can position themselves using moonlight's polarization and have a certain degree of phototaxis. There are about 2300 species of dung beetles in the world, which can be found on all the continents other than Antarctica.
