Cheung's work integrates elements of Western and Chinese aesthetics and embraces a dichotomy between tradition and modernity comprised of symbols and motifs in folk art and western artistic expression. The tortoise-shell has always been his favourite theme. The burning marks, holes and cracks that appear on oracle bones are distinctive symbols of Cheung's work.
