Meissionier was a self-taught artist who trained by studying the Dutch 17th-century masters in the Louvre Museum in Paris. Subsequently, he specialized in meticulously rendered genre scenes showing figures in historical costumes ranging in date from the 16th through the 18th century. Here, he shows four figures in 16th-century dress.
