When the Nuremberg Chronicle was published in 1493, it formed the most ambitious book-printing project undertaken since the invention of movable typesetting several decades earlier. It was also the most successful of many attempts at the time to write and print a history of the known world from the beginning of time until the present. An enormous undertaking, the Chronicle included more than six hundred pages with woodcut illustrations. Though it cannot be proven, there is strong evidence that Dürer, who was a very young artist at the time, may have contributed to the project.
