China National Silk Museum

China National Silk Museum
Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China

There are both warp-faced compound tabby and weft-faced compound twill samite in Nara period, 8th century in Japan. Many fabrics designed with the same patterns are remained in the Shosoin Repository. Those fabrics look like inferior, so maybe they were mass production. The pattern of our birds around a flower motif developed one of the typical court patterns in Heian period, from 9th to 12th centuries.
