This certificate was presented to Maggie Walker's youngest son, Melvin, upon his admission to the Zeta chapter of Omega Psi Phi on September 2nd, 1918. Melvin is considered one of the co-founders of the Zeta chapter, which is chartered through Virginia Union University in Richmond, though Walker himself was a graduate of Shaw University in Raleigh, NC. Originally chartered at Howard University in 1911, Omega Psi Phi is one of the nation's oldest African American collegiate fraternities and its distinguished members include such luminaries as Langston Hughes, Bayard Rustin, Jesse Jackson, L. Douglas Wilder, and Michael Jordan.
